German noise rockers TRIGGER CUT have really gone through it during the last few years. First, a devastating fire at their rehearsal space destroyed all their equipment and the early recordings for this album. Through determination and the aid of six (!) community-organized benefit compilations, they finished Soot, their third record. The band then hit another snag when starting their UK tour. Due to post-Brexit bureaucratic red-tape bullshit, they were turned away at the border, sparking international concern about the treatment of foreign touring bands, even appearing in mainstream publications like The Guardian. So, it has been a lot for a small touring band, but how is the album? It’s really good. “Water Fukkery” kicks it off with a mathy, DON CAB-style riff that explodes into trebly, sandpaper guitar and spoken/shrieked vocals like SHELLAC. “Soot Song” begins with fire alarm guitars that then run through several movements of hold-and-release tension that end in a quiet, chiming outro. “Slipstream” might be the perfect TRIGGER CUT song: it opens with a catchy figure and rolling drums, moves from textured guitar and hollered vocals down to near silence, and then takes off again into full-rocking mode. The songs are complex and emotional, and while not necessarily melodic, there is a compositional arrangement that is always interesting. A compelling and exciting record throughout, and a testament to tenacity. I’m glad they stuck it out.

REVIEW---thanxxx Jon :-)
Soot: a flaky deposit of shapeless carbon produced in the combustion of organic matter. Layers of etymological meaning leave a powdery residue of irony around the title of this third album from German noise rock trio Trigger Cut. The Proto-Indo-European sed (‘to sit’) can be found alongside the word’s Middle English and Proto-Germanic roots - soote, sote, sot, sōtą. Circumstances surrounding the album’s creation assign to ‘sit’ a pertinence equal to the word’s contemporary meaning. Fire destroyed the group’s rehearsal room in 2021, an event that left plenty of soot and members sitting around during an already limiting lockdown. The bird depicted in the cover art is the fabled phoenix rising from the ashes; not the most original or subtle of cultural signifiers, but one appropriate for this album’s blunt force. Trigger Cut’s return to the musical fold brims with pugnacious attitude, a firm resolve not to give in to calamity.

Starting over again has meant refining their first principles: in this case, a noise rock template that has been hammered out over their previous two releases, Rogo (2021) and Buster (2019). Track titles like ‘Soot Song’, ‘Water Fukkery’ and ‘Landlord’ give some indication of topical relevance vis-à-vis the fire situation, but the lyrics remain as cryptic as can be expected with vocalist/guitarist Ralph Schaarschmidt.

Trigger Cut adopt the coarse, derisive delivery of Scratch Acid and Laughing Hyenas but replace those outfits' jazzier blues rock tendencies with the skeletal structures of math rock. They embrace the contained song format of foundational noise rock bands like Halo of Flies and avoid the longueurs of the expanded and mathy post-rock direction Unwound took in the late 1990s/2000s. Brevity is key here: track lengths don’t exceed five minutes (well, a little on ‘Soot Song’). Stop-start dynamics act not just as dramatic interjection, but rug-pulling cognitive reset: rat king clusters out of Rodan and Hella broken up with choppy power chord punctuation redolent of War on Everybody-era God Bullies. The influence of post-hardcore boss Steve Albini looms large as it has since Trigger Cut’s inception.Big Black’s steely treble textures and machinic torsion inform Soot’s stylistic bases and narrative direction. The whirling turbo of interplay that opens ‘Landlord’ becomes with instrumental closer ‘Fury-O’ a threshing war engine gradually succumbing to inertia." If you could fix that up I would be most grateful.

The last few years have been tough for Trigger Cut. Lockdown frustrations and other personal difficulties Schaarschmidt has revealed through social media have culminated in the group’s biggest setback to date. A keenly anticipated and prepared for UK tour in April was cancelled at the last minute with the murky implementation of post-Brexit bureaucracy. The situation presents a troubling sign of the future for artistic relations with the Continent, but it’s tantalising to contemplate how Trigger Cut respond musically to this latest outrage.

Thanxx Supercorrupter :-)

Back in 2019, I chanced upon this band’s Buster LP and I was into it. The band generously sent me a link to their 2021 effort ROGO, and I think I offended them by not reviewing it. Hey, sometimes I listen to a record and it just doesn’t inspire anything in me to write about it. That doesn’t mean it’s bad or anything, just that I didn’t want to take my time to do anything with it. Anyhow, the band suffered an HQ fire that consumed all of their gear shortly after ROGO was released, and the worldwide community came together to put out a number of Bandcamp Benefit albums (myself included – contributing a new Dhawa track to the cause) to help them raise money to get back in business, so to speak. Incredibly, the band put everything back together and recorded a new release already, and today I finally had a chance to give it a whirl after one week in the public space.

This album has a raw, earnest production style that is a bit thin by today’s standards but hearkens back amazingly well to the halcyon days of the mid 90s “noise rock” scene. Fans of Touch & Go / AmRep stuff of the era know what I’m talking about and will likely be into this record a lot. Every instrument has plenty of room to shine and the mix feels spry and alive, almost like you’re in the practice space with the band as they chew through these eight cuts. The drums are plenty snappy, easily cutting through without a ton of heft (though the kick certainly never gets lost). The mix is pretty bass-forward, though the low-end is thin, instead favoring a mid/hi-mid overdriven sound that compliments the drum sound well. The guitars have a raunchy, rock-and-roll, “over-reverbed” tone to them that’s bright and articulate; akin to Hot Snakes or Polvo or something like that. The vocals are energized and the phrasing compliments the riffs well. Tonally, they come across sort of like a cross between Perry Farrell, Walter Schreifels, and Chris Spencer.

All in all, this is a fun collection of songs to peg the volume and jam along to. It’s also a quick listen, so what have ya got to loose? Check it out! – Jason

Water Fukkery – The big bounce of the rhythm section and spiraling melody from the guitars and vocals on this tune takes me right back to 1995 or so. This is a fun song that does a great job of keeping me bopping along with it. The vocals on this one are a lot like early Unsane vocals, particularly in the phrasing and the interplay with the chimey guitars. Ralph’s accent is endearing on this one and I’m into this tune, particularly the shuffling beat that leads into the battering ram of the chorus. Thumbs up!

Piggy In The Mirror – The lurching groove of the bass and drums on this one is awkward – albeit in a great way. I can’t help but move along with this one; all while the slightest little scowl of disgust spreads across my face. This tune has got a great pulse that demands full-on headbanging to all those unafraid to get into the music (dare I say it feels almost like a 1992 Rage Against the Machine sort of pulse). I’m into it.

Soot Song – After 40 seconds of rave up, the band sets in on a determined basher of a riff that stomps it’s way into your subconscious. This one is like a more muscular sounding Pussy Galore or something like that. Again, I can’t help but obey the big-beat groove and bang my whole body in time. So yeah, this is another fun sounding tune with energy to spare, and I liked the fake out ending and big reprise that finishes it out. Good stuff.

Hail Explosions – This one feels like At The Drive In co-mingled with Hot Snakes. Cool, right? It’s got energy to spare, the drums and bass easily driving it forward with a non-stop writhing that keeps me engaged and the brawny chorus filling it out at all the right times. Also, I love the slow-down near the ending. Rad. This is a solid rocker.

Landlord – The tempo comes up a bit through the manic raves ups that fill out this tune before settling in on another churning groove that I can’t help but bounce along to. At just over two minutes long, this tune doesn’t waste a lot of time and just does what it was born to do – rock out. I like it.

Okay, here we go: Die Noise-Platte an der sich 2021 (und darüber hinaus) alle anderen Bands messen lassen müssen.

Thanxx to Fecking Bahamas :-)

feckingbahamas.com/new-music-trigger-cut-fight-fire-with-fire-on-soot

Fire. What a word, especially today – it’s got so many meanings. For instance, earlier this year, Trigger Cut faced a literal fire in their rehearsal space, ravaging their equipment and no doubt rattling their mental cages as well.

Then there’s the more modern application of the word – as in, Soot, the new Trigger Cut album is fire. Blustering, triumphant, noisy fire.

Soot rambles recklessly through the wreckage of the band’s past on songs like the girthy “Water Fuckery” and “Soot Song,” in which reverberating towers of wailing noise and tornadoes of twang evoke the energy of disaster itself.

Check it out the madness below. The record simultaneously celebrates and exacts revenge upon the circumstances that brought it to light. Surely some of the material had been written before the fire, but anyone that’s lost equipment knows what a deeply detrimental effect it can have on you mentally, even if it’s immediately replaced. Soot manages to wear this exhaustion on its sleeve while also casting it out in the process.

Is cathartic the right word? It is certainly one of the right words, but in a way it feels almost like more of a time capsule. Luckily, the record’s front to back cavalcade of flagrant, antagonistic tunes will keep us coming back, no matter what it reminds us of.

Now that’s fighting fire with fire.

There were so many potential puns and titles for this article: wearing a soot, a record from the ashes, exacting the elements of revenge… ugh. Anyway. Soot is a badass record and you can check it out here, along with the rest of the band’s discography on Bandcamp. You can also buy us a coffee here if you’d like, that way we can put out any small fires in our bedroom. It’s just as wet as water, it’ll be fine. Coming up we’ve got Hey! Tonal, Ahleuchatistas, an interview with our mom, and more. Thanks for reading!
